Apple has overtaken Samsung in smartphone sales for the first time in four years

Apple saw a year-on-year growth of 14.9% whilst Samsung saw its sales fall by 11.8% in the same period says the market intelligence firm. The iPhone 12 was popular which made sales in the final quarter of last year and overtook Samsung for the first time in four years.

Across the whole of 2020, Apple did enjoy more modest growth of 3.3%, while Samsung's sales fell by a larger 14.6% says, Gartner. The 5G iPhone 12 series launched, which helped Apple record double-digit growth in the fourth quarter.

This means that Apple surpassed Samsung to claim the number one spot for the global smartphone vendor. Apple was once the top smartphone vendor in the fourth quarter of 2016.

Apple and Xiaomi were in 2020 the only two smartphone vendors of the top five rankings to experience growth. And across all smartphone makers, worldwide smartphone sales declined by 12.5% last year.
